Mark Skewes
Principal Research & Extension Manager

Mark grew up on a mixed wheat and sheep farm in the South Australian Mallee, before attending the University of Adelaide to complete a Bachelor of Science, followed by a Graduate Diploma in Natural Resource Management at Roseworthy Agricultural College.

Mark joined the SA Department of Agriculture in 1986, and in 1988 he and his wife Karyn moved to the Department’s Loxton Research Centre, in the Riverland region close to the border between South Australia, Victorian and New South Wales. Mark spent the next 37 years at the Research Centre, filling a range of research and extension roles.

While most of his work has been with permanent crops such as citrus and almond trees and grapevines, in recent years Mark was heavily involved in industrial hemp research, running trials at two sites in South Australia. When AgriFutures Australia launched their Industrial Hemp Variety Trials program Mark was selected as the National Coordinator, overseeing trials at 9 sites nationally over the three-year program.

Working for FarmLink takes Mark back to his roots in dryland farming, but also offers him a new challenge, bringing research and extension skills honed in irrigated horticulture into the farming systems space.

Caroline Keeton
Senior Research & Extension Officer

Caroline grew up on a small hobby farm in Kyabram, Victoria where her passion for agriculture first began. Her parents had moved from England to Australia some years prior to forge a career in the dairy industry and it wasn’t long before she was following in their footsteps.

Caroline went on to study a Bachelor of Agriculture (General Production) followed by a Bachelor of Science with Honours (Agronomy) at the University of New England in Armidale, New South Wales. Over the course of her studies, Caroline discovered a new interest and aptitude for plant production and cropping. Her Honours project followed, looking at chickpea pollination in cool ambient temperatures and as a result a growing interest in agricultural research.

After completing her studies, Caroline was looking for practical experience in broadacre cropping and the opportunity to learn from industry professionals. Caroline spent two years on the Lawson Grains Graduate program where she gained valuable hands-on experience. Caroline then continued with Lawson Grains as a Farm Hand before travelling to England for an extended holiday.

Caroline has a keen interest in crop agronomy and is also passionate about improving farm sustainability and combatting issues such as chemical resistance.
